McSally: Arizonans worried about state issues, not Trump impeachment

PHOENIX — Sen. Martha McSally of Arizona believes the people she serves are more focused on pressing state issues than the impeachment inquiry President Donald Trump is facing.

“The constituents I represent are more wanting us to focus on the things that matter to them and move forward in a way where people can have their voices heard at the ballot box,” McSally told KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Mac & Gaydos on Wednesday.

McSally said constituents she’s spoken to recently have expressed concerns about border security and health care.

She added that she isn’t putting much of her focus on impeachment proceedings, instead devoting her attention to Arizona-specific issues.

She called the impeachment inquiry and other recent Trump reports “a distraction to what really matters to most Arizonans and what I’m hearing from them.”

McSally mentioned the pending United States-Mexico-Canada free trade agreement and lowering the cost of prescription drugs as issues Arizonans have spoken to her about.

“The reality is we have to do better at border security and it’s my job to put legislation and funding on his desk that does meaningful stuff to secure the border,” McSally said.

The House of Representatives last week launched an official impeachment inquiry stemming from a whistleblower’s complaint of Trump seeking help from the Ukraine president in investigating Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden.

A Politico poll released Wednesday showed more voters supported impeachment proceedings against the president than opposed them for the first time.
