PHOENIX — The Arizona Department of Transportation is asking photographers to submit their best shots for its annual contest.

ADOT’s photography contest is in its 12th year, with three winners to be featured in the September 2020 issue of department-produced magazine Arizona Highways, according to a press release.

This year’s first-place winner will receive an in-state photo workshop valued at $2,500. The second- and third-place winners will receive prize packages from Tempe Camera valued at $500 and $250, respectively.

Professional and amateur photographers are eligible for the contest, and submission must be in by Dec. 15. All photos must be taken in Arizona.

The photos will be judged in two categories — landscape and macros (close-up). Entries will be judged on composition, framing, light and an overall “wow” factor.

Last year’s first-place winner, Sara Wittenberger, captured a Christmas day photo of Mount Ord in the Tonto National Forest.

Tam Ryan won second place for a photo of egrets in the mist at a Gilbert preserve.
