Severe thunderstorm warning signals late additions to monsoon totals

PHOENIX — It’s not over yet. A weak 2019 monsoon season is making a late push with Severe Thunderstorm Warnings across Maricopa County and Pinal County ending at 5:30 p.m.

The storm was making a northwestern approach into Phoenix with hail and high winds reported around 4 p.m in Apache Junction and Gold Canyon.

A broader thunderstorm watch was put into effect until 8:45 p.m. in both Maricopa and Pinal counties.

According to the National Weather Service in Phoenix, the 2019 monsoon season has produced the fewest amount of lightning strikes in the last 20 years.

Higher than usual temperatures combined with low percipitation has led to more than double the amount of acres burned in fires across Arizona compared to last year.
