Weekend freeway closures to cause major disruptions in East Valley

PHOENIX — The most expansive round of closures for Arizona’s largest freeway project in history will cause major disruptions in the East Valley this weekend, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Eastbound Interstate 10 will be closed between the U.S. 60 Superstition Freeway and Loop 202 Santan Freeway from 5 a.m. Saturday to 5 a.m. Monday to remove old overhead signs and replace them with signs related to the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway.

The South Mountain Freeway, expected to be completed in 2020, will be a 22-mile link between the East Valley and West Valley and provide a much-needed alternative to I-10 through downtown Phoenix.

The westbound U.S. 60 ramp to eastbound I-10 and all eastbound I-10 on-ramps between Baseline Road and the Loop 202 will also be closed during that time.

Eastbound I-10 drivers not planning on stopping in Phoenix can avoid the closure by detouring on southbound State Route 85 in the Buckeye area to eastbound Interstate 8 to reach I-10 in the Casa Grande area, according to ADOT.

Other sections of I-10 will also have closures for unrelated projects.

Eastbound I-10 will be closed between the I-17 stack interchange and State Route 51 near downtown Phoenix from 9 p.m. Friday to 9 a.m. Saturday for tunnel cleaning and maintenance. All I-17 ramps to eastbound I-10 will also be closed.

Westbound I-10 will be closed between the I-17 split interchange near Sky Harbor Airport and Seventh Avenue from 9 p.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday for tunnel cleaning and maintenance. The southbound SR 51 ramp to westbound I-10 will also be closed.

Loop 101 Price Freeway on and off-ramps will be closed at various times between Baseline Road and Chandler Boulevard from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for a freeway widening project.

Both directions of the Loop 101 Pima Freeway will see lane reductions between Cave Creek Road and 19th Avenue in north Phoenix from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for bridge girder installation as part of a freeway widening project.
