Mesa makes changes to several school zones ahead of students’ return

PHOENIX — The Mesa Transportation Department made several changes to school zones over the summer ahead of students’ return on Tuesday, according to a press release.

A pedestrian hybrid beacon was installed at Westwood High School to increase safety of students who cross the road getting to school.

Highland Junior High, located on the southeast corner of Power and Guadalupe roads, saw two changes.

A traffic signal was installed, eliminating the 15 mph school zone, while sidewalks improvements now allow for an accessible path to and from campus.

Sidewalk extensions were installed at Hermosa Vista Elementary School’s 15 mph crosswalk to create a safer standing space and more well-defined crosswalk for students.

The school typically sees a large amount of students who ride their bikes to school and limit the standing area, according to the release.

Carson Junior High added bike lanes and improved sidewalks along Westwood to provide a safer route traveling to and from school and to help better define restrictions for parking.
