I-17 reopens after fire causes closure between Flagstaff and Phoenix

PHOENIX — Interstate 17 has reopened after both directions had been closed between Flagstaff and Phoenix due to a brush fire.

Originally, both directions were closed, but the southbound lanes reopened at around 10:30 p.m. The northbound lanes remained closed for a brief time. The closures were at milepost 259 (Bloody Basin Road) and milepost 252 (Sunset Point).

Law enforcement was on the scene of the closure to direct traffic.

As of 9:00 a.m. Saturday, there were between 125-130 firefighters battling the fire. It was 20% contained.

If traveling to or from Flagstaff and the Valley, drivers were told to use SR 260/SR 87 or SR 69/169/89/US 60 as alternative routes.

The “Badger Springs Fire” is estimated to have already covered over 1,500 acres, according to BLM Arizona Fire.

One air attack, three air tankers, three crews, five fire engines and multiple state local fire departments have been assigned.
