Issues involving the police have dominated our recent headlines. In Phoenix, several officers have been reassigned to nonenforcement duties after questionable social media posts were traced to them. The Phoenix New Times reports that several of these same officers have been involved in an inordinate number of police shootings. In Mesa, the rank-and-file police union has voted “no confidence” in that city’s police chief.

In the Think Tank this week is Tempe Police Chief Sylvia Moir.

Among other things, we discuss:

  • How does a police chief manage the conflicting expectations of line officers who expect their chief to back them up after controversial actions and a public that expects balance and objectivity?
  • What significant changes have there been in policing over the years?
  • What differences does she see in policing in California (where she was once a chief) and in Tempe?
  • How has police training evolved over the years?

The Think Tank airs on KTAR News 92.3 FM on Sunday at 1-2 p.m. and repeats at 9-10 p.m.

Podcasts are available after each show is broadcast.
