Woman, 53, killed after fire breaks out in her Phoenix condo

PHOENIX — One woman was killed in a Phoenix condominium fire Monday morning, authorities said.

Phoenix Fire Capt. Rob McDade told KTAR News 92.3 FM that the fire broke out near 29th Street and Greenway Road around 5:30 a.m.

“When crews arrived on scene, we had a heavy amount of fire pouring out of a single condominium, which was connected to multiple condominiums,” McDade said.

He said during rescue efforts, firefighters found an unresponsive 53-year-old woman on the floor.

He said firefighters attempted to resuscitate the victim, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

McDade said a man who also lived there woke up to the fire and couldn’t wake the woman.

The man went outside to retrieve fire extinguishers on the patio but was unable to get back into the house, McDade said.

“The fire was just burning too hot, too fast,” McDade said.

He said the victim’s condo was completely destroyed, but others only saw smoke residue and water damage.

Power was turned off at the condos, displacing about six residents for at least part of the day, McDade said.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
