New members of Phoenix City Council to be sworn in Thursday

PHOENIX — The winners in Phoenix’s City Council race will be sworn in Thursday at an inauguration ceremony in downtown Phoenix.

Betty Guardado of District 5 and Carlos Garcia of District 8 will be inaugurated at 10 a.m. at the Orpheum Theatre.

The two won a special runoff election on May 21 after no candidates got a majority of the vote in March.

Guardado took her district with 62% of the vote, leading Vania Guevara by nearly 3,000 votes, while Garcia won his with a smaller lead at 51%, topping Mike Johnson by about 400 votes.

Guardado will replace former mayoral candidate Daniel Valenzuela and serve until April 29, 2021.

Garcia will replace Mayor Kate Gallego and serve until April 17, 2023.
