PHOENIX — The KTAR newsroom collected six awards, including two first-place finishes, from the Associated Press Television and Radio Association, it was announced Thursday.

KTAR News 92.3 FM took two first-place finishes in reporting and four second-place finishes for digital presence and reporting in the annual competition among 13 states.

The newsroom won first place for best daytime newscast, specifically for coverage of the 2018 election results.

News director Martha Maurer earned first place in sports features for her June 2018 piece on the only Latina on the Team USA fencing team.

The newsroom also won second place for best digital presence (a combination of website and social media coverage) surrounding the death of Sen. John McCain, the 2018 election, the Red for Ed movement and immigration.

The station took second place for best continuing coverage, specifically about asylum seekers dropped off at Phoenix-area churches, and best evening newscast for Election Day coverage.

The station also took second place for best special programming, notably for the coverage of McCain’s death.

The awards came on the heels of KTAR News winning a regional Murrow for best newcast in April.
