Military insurance-banker USAA opens IT center in north Phoenix

PHOENIX – USAA has expanded its Phoenix operations with a sizable three-story addition to its campus that will have room for more than 1,000 staffers.

The insurance-banking-investment company dedicated to military members officially opened the tech-and-digital-focused building in the northwest Valley last Friday.

There were plans to add jobs in the next few years, mostly in IT development.

Gov. Doug Ducey and Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego attended the dedication near Happy Valley Road at Norterra Parkway.

“Phoenix is a critical employment center for USAA and we are very excited to continue our growth here,” USAA Regional Vice President Greg DeBernard said in a press release.

He told the Phoenix Business Journal that about 350 had been hired for the new site.

The company already employs more than 4,800 in the Valley at the campus’ other building.

The building takes up 147,000 square feet, pushing the site’s occupied space to more than 1.1 million square feet, the company said.

Tech giant Microsoft recently purchased a large plot of land in El Mirage to “support the growing demand for cloud and internet services” in Arizona and the western U.S.

The company paid $20 million for 150 acres.
