Wrong-way crash on Loop 202 closes roads near Pat’s Run

PHOENIX — A roll-over crash involving a wrong way driver was made worse when an occupant of the wrong way vehicle was struck by a third car while fleeing from the scene.

“Troppers started receiving calls of wrong way vehicle,” Public Information Officer Kameron Lee with the Arizona Department of Public Safety said. “While our troopers were responding to the area, additional callers stated that vehicle had been involved in a crash with a pick up truck.

“That crash caused the pick up truck to roll,” Lee said.

According to Lee, an occupant of the wrong way vehicle then fled the scene.

“As she was running from the scene, she was struck by another car on the transition ramp from eastbound 202 to state route 101,” Lee said.

The original crash occurred on the eastbound Loop 202 near Dobson Road, which closed the Loop 101 and Loop 202 transition, and added to what was already a messy traffic situation on Saturday morning.

Participants and spectators to the annual Pat’s Run were delayed getting in and out of the event. According to Lee, the actual race was unaffected.

Road closures on McClintock Drive and Scottsdale Road due to the event made it even more challenging to navigate Loop 202.

The incident reportedly occurred around 1:30 a.m. and the road was reopened around 8:15 a.m.

The driver of the roll over pick up truck was taken to the hospital and was expected to be released later on Saturday.

The woman who fled the wrong way car and was stuck by another vehicle is not expected to be released from the hospital until the middle of next week.

An investigation is underway as detectives were called to the scene.
