Phoenix police release sketch of attempted kidnapping suspect

PHOENIX – Police have released a sketch of the man suspected of trying to kidnap a child off the street as she walked to school in her north Phoenix neighborhood.

The 11-year-old girl told officers that a man came up from behind her April 3, grabbed her arm, pulled it behind her back and covered her face with his other arm.

He was knocked to the ground by a bystander, who then pulled out a handgun and told the suspect to leave the girl alone. The suspect, whom the girl said she didn’t know, ran away.

The child had been walking to Village Meadows Elementary School near Union Hills Drive and 19th Avenue around 7:30 a.m.

The principal sent a letter to parents Monday.

The suspect was described as a man with dark skin and green eyes and he had a stud-style nose ring in his left nostril. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt.

He ran away heading west on Morningside Drive near 22nd Avenue.
