PHOENIX — Scottsdale-based movie theater chain Harkins announced plans Tuesday to open a 12-screen multiplex in a southwest Phoenix neighborhood by late 2020.
The theater will be located in the 300,000-square-foot Laveen Park Place that is under construction near 59th Avenue and Baseline Road, where grocery store Sprouts recently announced it will lease space.
Harkins said the new location will include a premium large format auditorium, state-of-the-art audio technology, leather lounge seats, reserved seating and laser projection in all auditoriums.
There will also be a bar in the lobby with local craft beer and expanded hot food options, including burgers and flatbreads.

“I am proud to announce that Harkins Theatres has selected Laveen as the next location for their newest theatres,” Phoenix City Councilman Michael Nowakowski said in a statement Tuesday.
“Harkins joins Sprouts as the newest business to move into Laveen with more to come.”
Councilwoman Felicita Mendoza said in a statement that she is also “excited” to bring the theater to the neighborhood.
“Laveen residents have been asking for this type of amenity for years and I am proud to say we are making this a reality,” she said.
Harkins, founded in 1933, has more than 30 locations in five states, and this will be its 20th theater in the Phoenix metro area.
The company has not yet announced a groundbreaking date.
