PHOENIX — Banner Health will begin construction on its new 40,000-square-foot emergency department in the West Valley on Wednesday.

The department will be an addition to the Banner Boswell Medical Center located in Sun City.

Sun Health Foundation and Banner Boswell Medical Center will be hosting a groundbreaking ceremony at 9 a.m. at the medical center located on Thunderbird Boulevard and 103rd Avenue.

The ceremony will recognize West Valley community leaders “who’ve been instrumental in leading, delivering and supporting health care,” according to a press release.

The event will mark the beginning of Banner Boswell’s renovation to the current 17,000-square-foot department.

According to a press release, the $60.4 million project is being funded through an investment by Banner Health and the Sun Health Foundation.

The department will be “providing 33 percent more patient beds and faster, easier access for patients,” according to the release.

The project will also include a new six-story patient tower and a new main lobby.

The patient tower and emergency department are expected to be completed by fall 2020, according to the release.

The Banner Bowell Medical Center specializes in heart, cancer, stroke and emergency care.
