Man charged with trying to kill ex-wife outside Hacienda HealthCare

PHOENIX – A man shot by an off-duty police officer outside Hacienda HealthCare in Phoenix earlier this month was arrested at the hospital Wednesday and charged with attempted murder, according to court documents.

Jose Manuel Castillo, 58, is accused of trying to kill his ex-wife, who worked at the facility, on the morning of March 11.

He was charged on two counts: attempted first-degree murder-premeditated and aggravated assault-violating a protective order.

An off-duty Florence police officer working security in uniform heard screams at around 5:30 a.m. and found Castillo standing over a woman and pointing a gun at her, according to the probable cause statement.

When the officer, who was identified only by the last name of Banks in court documents, commanded Castillo to drop the weapon, Castillo began to run while turning back to fire at the woman.

Banks fired several rounds at Castillo until the suspect stopped shooting.

Castillo was transported to Banner University Medical Center, where he was treated. The extent of his injuries was not disclosed.

A status conference for Castillo was scheduled for Wednesday in Maricopa County Superior Court, and a preliminary hearing was set for April 5.

Hacienda HealthCare is the facility on South Mountain Avenue near 16th Street where an incapacitated patient gave birth late last year after being raped.

Nathan Sutherland, a former Hacienda nurse who cared for her when she was impregnated, was arrested after police said a DNA test matched him to the baby.

He awaits trial after entering a not guilty plea in February.
