Kate Gallego to be inaugurated Thursday as Phoenix’s mayor

PHOENIX – Nine days after being elected, Kate Gallego will be inaugurated as Phoenix’s mayor Thursday morning in a historic downtown theater.

The inauguration will be held at the Orpheum Theatre on Adams Street near Second Avenue. Doors open at 9 a.m., and the ceremony begins an hour later.

The program will include a musical performance by Mariachi Rubor, a poetry reading by Arizona poet laureate Alberto Alvaro Rios and closing remarks by Gila River Indian Community Gov. Stephen Roe Lewis.

Gallego, who defeated Daniel Valenzuela in a runoff election on March 12, will become the only female mayor among the nation’s 10 largest cities, according to a press release.

She succeeds Greg Stanton, who stepped down in May 2018 to embark on a successful run for the U.S. House of Representatives.

Councilwoman Thelda Williams has been serving as interim mayor until the election could be completed.

Gallego will face reelection in 2021, when Stanton’s term expires.
