3 Phoenix-area men sentenced for interstate kidnapping

PHOENIX — Three men from metro Phoenix were recently sentenced to federal prison for kidnapping a woman from California and taking her to Arizona last year.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office announced Tuesday that 20-year-old Jesus Humberto Barrera Estrada of Scottsdale, 22-year-old Corey Webster Newkirk of Tempe and 20-year-old Gabriel Mario Morales of Tempe were sentenced for the crime.

Barrera Estrada was sentenced Monday to 60 months in federal prison followed by six years of supervised release.

Newkirk was sentenced in January to 78 months in federal prison followed by five years of supervised release.

Morales was sentenced in December to 60 months in federal prison followed by five years of supervised release.

All three men had pleaded guilty to interstate kidnapping after they took Newkirk’s 23-year-old girlfriend from her California home on June 4.

The men “ambushed the victim, physically restrained her inside a vehicle, and drove across state lines,” the attorney’s office said.

They were arrested in Quartzsite early the next morning.
