Final Arizonans to receive money from Volkswagen emissions lawsuit

PHOENIX — The final 1,800 Arizonans eligible to receive money from a 2016 Volkswagen emissions lawsuit will soon receive their receipt, according to the Arizona Attorney General’s Office.

The $1,000 checks are part of a $40 million settlement reached between Volkswagen and the state of Arizona over the fact Volkswagen had been misleading the government and consumers with its “clean diesel” claims by programming its vehicles to cheat on emissions tests.

Checks started going out in October and more than 6,700 Arizona consumers responded to eligibility claim forms, according to a news release.

“I wanted to make sure that our folks received the maximum amount of restitution, which they did as a result of our lawsuit,” Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich told KTAR News 92.3 FM last May.

“And furthermore I wanted to make sure that the penalties that we imposed on Volkswagen were enough to deter any sort of future wrongdoing and also to make sure they were properly punished for their false advertising.”

Arizonans who bought or leased certain Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche diesel models from 2008 to 2015 were eligible for restitution payments.

Those who received an initial payment of $964 in October and November 2018 will also receive an additional $36 check to bring their final total to $1,000.

All checks must be deposited or cashed within 90 days of receiving in the mail.
