Arizona’s first sports physical therapy clinic for youths open in Phoenix area

PHOENIX – Arizona’s first sports medicine physical therapy clinics designed for kids and young adults have opened in metro Phoenix.

Phoenix Children Hospital’s two sites, one in Gilbert and another in north Phoenix, feature colorful walls, fun patterned floors and professional-grade equipment.

Sports medicine physicians from Phoenix Children’s Center for Pediatric Orthopedics provide clinical oversight while physical therapists manage care.

“The Phoenix Children’s Hospital family-centered approach to care is an important aspect,” that sets the clinics apart from others, said Matt Fryberger, manager of rehab services for the hospital.

“The therapists are hired with the intent that they are working primarily with kids. … Parents know that when they come here the social environment is going to be appropriate for kids,” he said.

The clinics give patients access to anti-gravity treadmills and services that had previously only been available to elite or professional athletes, such as kinesio taping.

Any child or young adult with a sports-related injury can receive a referral from his or her doctor to receive treatment at the facilities.

One of the first patients at the Phoenix location, Serena Artzmcmahon, is a 15-year-old who is involved in competitive cheer.

She recently broke an ankle after damaging a growth plate.

“I just really like how nice [the therapists] are here and how comfortable I feel. The therapists take their time and focus on me and make sure I’m given all the proper time needed,” she said.
