A little rain, a little fog roll into eastern parts of metro Phoenix

PHOENIX — A surprise guest literally dropped in on part of metro Phoenix early Wednesday — fog — after a night of rain.

The fog settled around pockets of the East Valley, particularly Tempe and Chandler, during the dark of morning, creating visibility issues for those starting their commutes.

“Anytime you get a lot of moisture sitting in the ground and you have clear skies above, it makes that perfect scenario for fog to form,” Andrew Deemer with National Weather Service Phoenix told KTAR News 92.3 FM. 

A dense fog advisory was in place until 11 a.m. for Maricopa and Pinal counties.

A message board on westbound Interstate 10 near Baseline Road advised drivers to take it easy on the roadways because of the conditions.

David Woodfill with the Arizona Department of Transportation told KTAR News that drivers should avoid travel if possible, but if they can’t, they should slow down, keep their distance and avoid driving distracted.

Woodfill also advised drivers to avoid using their high beams and instead use fog lights during the day.

The hazy conditions replaced widespread showers that fell Tuesday evening.

A flash flood warning went into effect in Maricopa County that lasted from 4 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.

About 0.15 inches made its way down from the clouds, the National Weather Service said.

Another round could be here Thursday, when there’s a 30 percent chance for rain.
