PHOENIX — Whether you love them or hate them, a new offering of dockless bikes and scooters is joining the Valley mix.

Uber, known for its car ride-hailing app, announced it would roll out 1,000 JUMP-branded bikes and scooters to Scottsdale and Mesa, starting Tuesday.

Uber acquired JUMP’s dockless bike system in May and introduced JUMP scooters in October.

“With great weather, popular local events, and bike-friendly roads, Scottsdale and Mesa are perfect cities for e-bikes and scooters,” Andrew Waters of JUMP said in a press release.

“We’ve seen these transportation options in Denver and San Diego make it easier for residents to enjoy their cities without a car and we’re excited to bring this experience to Arizona.”

The bikes and scooters are free to unlock and cost 15 cents per minute to ride, with five free 15-minute rides available per day until Feb. 4.

The scooters are electric, as are the bikes, which can travel up to 20 mph.

Low-income Arizonans can enroll in the JUMP Boost Plan, which costs $5 for the first year and allows for 60 minutes of daily free ride time.

Uber will hand out free helmets on Scottsdale and Mesa streets until Feb. 4.

Users will be charged a $25 fee if they lock a device outside of the system’s operating area.

To use JUMP bikes, you can either download the JUMP app, or use the Uber app and select bike and scooter mode.

The scooters are only available through the Uber app.

After a conflict with Bird scooters in early 2018, Scottsdale created a set of rules for the devices, including that they are prohibited on streets with speed limits of 40 mph or higher and can be impounded if they are improperly parked.
