PHOENIX — The Tonto National Forest will begin selling permits for Christmas trees on Nov. 13, officials said.

Permits are $15 and customers can purchase them as early as 8 a.m. in the Phoenix, Mesa, Payson and Scottsdale locations.

Starting Nov. 17, each permit allows the holder to cut a tree within any designated cutting site on the Tonto National Forest regardless of where the permit is purchased, officials said.

Permits must be purchased in person on a first-come, first-served basis until they are gone. A map is included with the permit that shows where the designated cutting areas are and additional instructions on Christmas tree cutting.

The Prescott National forest will also provide permits for Christmas trees for purchase. Officials said over 600 over-the-counter permits will be for sale at $20. The Bradshaw Ranger and Chino Valley Ranger District offices will have the permits starting Nov. 17 and the Verde Ranger District starting Nov. 19.

In support of the Every Kid in a Park action, the Forest Service will offer free Christmas tree permits to students attending fourth grade. Students must present a fourth-grade pass or paper voucher and be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Students can also receive a free pass for a year to access to other national forests around the country.

Before purchasing permits, forest officials suggest going over the rules below:

  • Each Christmas tree permit allows permit holders to cut  a tree up to 10 feet tall
  • One tree per household. One person may purchase up to four permits for other families not living in the household
  • Permits are for personal use only
  • No refunds on Christmas tree permits
  • Cutting dates are November 17 through December 24

Other tips and hints are provided on the Forest Service website.

We want to hear from you.
