PHOENIX — Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake said Wednesday there was no place for President Donald Trump’s comments about the testimony of the woman who accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault.

In an appearance on the “Today” show, Flake said Trump’s remarks at a rally, during which he questioned Christine Blasey Ford’s credibility, “It’s just not right. I wish he hadn’t done it. It’s kind of appalling.”

At the Tuesday night event in Mississippi, Trump pointed out holes in her account as the audience laughed.

Flake said mocking “something this sensitive at a political rally is just not right.”

The Republican said last week he would vote to confirm Kavanaugh, but then called for an expanded FBI investigation of the accusations, delaying the confirmation timetable.

The outgoing senator said that Kavanaugh’s aggressive testimony before the Judiciary Committee was “probably how I would react if I felt I was unjustly accused.

“Some of the comments were sharp and more partisan than some of us would like to see. … I think you have to give some leeway for the charges that were coming against him and how he would feel.”

In Congress, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he is certain that the FBI’s report will be finished and the Senate will vote on Kavanaugh’s nomination this week.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
