PHOENIX — There will be no freeway closures this holiday weekend, so Labor Day travel should be a little less labored.

The Arizona Department of Transportation said in a statement that travelers should expect heavy traffic to and from popular destinations at peak travel times this weekend, but there are no construction-related closures scheduled until late Monday night.

Although there will be no new freeway closures this weekend, ADOT said that closures already in place, like the northbound I-17 ramp to westbound I-40 in Flagstaff, will remain closed.

ADOT said it will be working with the Arizona Department of Public Safety and first responders to clear crashes and any other unexpected incidents that may cause delays.

The department is reducing speed limits by 10 mph along Interstate 17 between New River Road and the Sunset Point Rest Area. The temporary signs will be displayed during peak travel times along northbound I-17 on Friday and along southbound I-17 on Monday.

Last Labor Day weekend, nine people were killed in nine fatal crashes, with three of those crashes involving alcohol. ADOT reminded drivers to wear seat belts, obey speed limits and prevent impaired people from driving.

“For holiday weekend driving, the focus is really on what you can do to help with highway safety,” Doug Nintzel, ADOT spokesman, said.

“Don’t speed, don’t drive impaired, buckle up and stay alert. One of the safest things you really can do is to get enough rest before heading out on a trip because drowsy driving really is a form of impaired driving.”
