Sen. Jeff Flake honors John McCain on Senate floor

Aug 27, 2018, 7:47 PM | Updated: 7:49 pm

PHOENIX — After already making numerous appearances to pay his respects to U.S. Sen. John McCain, Sen. Jeff Flake took to the Senate floor on Monday to honor the life and service of the late senator.

“In it and through [John McCain’s] service, he defied characterization, frustrated the tired conventions of the way party loyalists are suppose to behave, acted against his own political interests time and time again in a way from our vantage points today is nothing short of awe inspiring,” Flake said of McCain.

“He recognized that democracy is hard, but that living in bondage with tyranny is far harder. He knew that giving into our worst impulses to score political victories was as easy as it was dangerous.”

For Flake, Monday’s speech was the latest message he conveyed to the public about McCain.

On Aug. 25, the day the senator died from brain cancer, Flake wrote an article to the Washington Post, honoring the man who he shared the state of Arizona with. He jokingly referred to himself and others before him as simply “the other senator in Arizona.”

The following day, Flake was visibly shaken up by the passing of the senator while on CNN’s State of the Union.

“I’ve admired him my whole entire life and it’s tough to imagine the Senate without him,” Flake said as he choked up on Sunday. “It’s tough to imagine politics without John McCain, but we need to go on.”
