Potentially powerful thunderstorm moves into West Valley

A potentially powerful thunderstorm, with winds in excess of 40 mph, moved into the West Valley on Friday afternoon, the National Weather Service said.

PHOENIX — A potentially powerful thunderstorm moved into the West Valley on Friday afternoon, the National Weather Service said.

The slow-moving storm was tracked over Surprise Stadium, near Sun City West, at around 3 p.m.

However, around 4:30 p.m., NWS tweeted that there wasn’t much movement east of Tonopah on the Interstate 10.

Other areas that could be impacted included Glendale, Surprise, El Mirage, Youngtown, Sun City, Waddell, Arrowhead Mall and Luke AFB.

Winds in excess of 40 mph were possible with the storm, with the possibility of blowing dust reducing visibility.

Earlier, a flash flood warning was issued for parts of western Maricopa County and beyond, including Wickenburg, Wittmann and Morristown. That warning was set to expire at 6 p.m.

Thunderstorm chances were forecast to decrease throughout the region into the weekend, with above-normal temperatures returning by Sunday, when it could reach 110 degrees.

Monsoon activity was expected to return by Tuesday.
