PHOENIX – The Mayo Clinic in Phoenix was rated as one of the best adult hospitals in the country and two other area facilities received national recognition in U.S. News and World Reports’ annual rankings, which were released Tuesday.

The website ranked the nation’s top 50 hospitals in 16 specialties. Those results were used to create an overall honor roll of the nation’s 20 best hospitals for 2018-19.

The Mayo Clinic was ranked No. 1 overall in Arizona and cracked the national honor roll, tied for 11th. It was No. 20 in last year’s rankings. The facility earned national recognition in 11 specialties and was among the top 10 three times, in gastroenterology and GI surgery (No. 5), pulmonology (No. 5) and geriatrics (No. 6).

The other area hospitals to be nationally ranked were Banner University Medical Center Phoenix (five specialties) and Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center (two specialties).

Banner University Medical Center Tucson was the only other facility in Arizona to be nationally ranked, earning recognition in three specialties.

The website also provided a breakdown by metropolitan area. Three of the Valley’s top five were Banner facilities: No. 1 Mayo Clinic, No. 2 Banner Phoenix, No. 3 (tie) Banner Boswell Medical Center in Sun City, No. 3 (tie) St. Joseph’s and No. 5 Banner Estrella Medical Center in Phoenix.

The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, was ranked No. 1 in the country.

U.S. News released its 2018-19 rankings of children’s hospitals in June. Phoenix Children’s Hospital was nationally ranked in 10 specialties and was the state’s only children’s hospital to be recognized. PCH’s best showing came in the cardiology and heart surgery category, where it ranked ninth.
