PHOENIX — Members of an organization pushing to have Route 66 designated as a National Historic Trail are in Arizona this week as they make their way across the iconic highway.

Representatives from the nonprofit National Trust for Historic Preservation scheduled the following meetups as they pass through state:

• Thursday, 4-6 p.m.: Wigwam Village Hotel #6, 811 W. Hopi Drive, Holbrook.

• Friday, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.: La Posada Historic District, 200 E. Second St., Winslow.

• Saturday, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.: El Pueblo Motel, 3120 Historic Route 66, Flagstaff

• Sunday, 3-5 p.m.: Powerhouse Visitor Center/Arizona Route 66 Museum, 120 W. Andy Devine Ave. #2, Kingman.

The group left Chicago on July 2. It traveled through Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas before reaching Arizona.

California is up next. The tour was scheduled to conclude Aug. 3 in Los Angeles.

The National Park Service said there are 19 designated National Historic Trails, including the Trail of Tears, the Lewis and Clark trail and the Selma to Montgomery March in Alabama.

It is up to Congress to decide whether a route should get the designation.
