Cardinals GM Steve Keim turns self in to begin extreme DUI jail sentence

PHOENIX — Arizona Cardinals general manager Steve Keim turned himself in to authorities Tuesday night to begin his two-day jail sentence for extreme DUI.

Keim pleaded guilty to the charge earlier in the day, then turned himself in and was booked around 9 p.m., Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Joaquin Enriquez confirmed in an email early Wednesday.

It was the second DUI for Keim, whose first came in 1996.

Extreme DUI is a Class 1 misdemeanor. A conviction could result in 30 days in jail. Time served can be modified, although not less than 24 hours, if probation terms are followed.

Keim self-surrendered at the Lower Buckeye Jail near 35th Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road.

The Cardinals suspended Keim for five weeks and fined him $200,000. The team planned to donate the money to Mothers Against Drunk Driving Arizona.

“I fully deserve and accept the punishment that has been issued. My goal is to do everything I can to grow from this personally and help others learn from my inexcusable behavior,” Keim said in a partial statement released by the team.

He was pulled over July 4 in Chandler. Officers said they smelled alcohol on this breath but Keim refused to undergo field sobriety tests. He did consent to a blood draw.

The police report showed Keim had a blood-alcohol level of 0.19, more than twice Arizona’s legal limit of 0.08 for drivers.

Keim has been the Cardinals general manager since 2013. He signed a contract extension in February through the 2022 NFL season.
