PHOENIX — Downed power lines have left an estimated 500 people without power in west Phoenix between 67th and 71st Avenue and from McDowell Road to Roosevelt Street.

According to police, a collision at 67th and McDowell took out nearby power lines and left one person dead, causing the outage.

A 2003 Ford Mustang GT and a 2004 Nissan 350Z were speed racing down the road when the two collided with each other and went out of control.

Both vehicles rolled with the Nissan crashing into a power pole, causing the outage.

The driver of the Nissan, Armondo Acosta was pronounced dead at the scene. Jario Pedregon, the driver of the Ford, was not harmed but appeared to be impaired, according to authorities. He was later charged with homicide and booked into the Maricopa County Jail.

The downed lines affected traffic lights in the area as well as lights on the I-10 overpass, which have all since been restored.

Salt River Projects crews were working to restore power to the area but power was not expected to be restored until 4:30 p.m.

Without power, many could be without air conditioning or refrigeration, which could cause problems with temperatures expected to reach a high of 111 degrees this afternoon.

No furthur updates were given at this time.
