Maricopa County Library District turning fines into food

PHOENIX — Have some overdue books?
Instead of paying a cash fine back to the library, turn it into food.
The Maricopa County Library District is holding its Food for Fines drive from July 6-15.
The MCLD is allowing non-perishable food items as forms of payment instead of the traditional cash option.
The district will waive $2.00 in overdue fees for each item donated, up to $50 per account.
In 2017, the district waived $35,968 in fines.
Only overdue, processing and restocking fines are eligible. Lost material, card replacement, collection agency fees and printing fees will not be waived.
All donations go to local food pantries. Items such as peanut butter and jelly, mac and cheese, cereal and canned vegetables are always in high demand, according to the MCLD.
Don’t have a fine and want to donate?
The district will still honor donations even if you have no existing overdue fees by waiving fees on a child’s account instead.
