PHOENIX — If the idea of comforting dogs is more appealing to you than seeing fireworks, there’s a perfect volunteer opportunity on the Fourth of July.

Maricopa County Animal Care and Control has invited the public to hang out at its two shelters from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Wednesday to keep dogs calm during the peak fireworks hours.

Many dogs are easily frightened by loud noises, and the Fourth of July can be an extremely stressful time for them.

Volunteers were asked to bring something to sit on while helping to keep the dogs distracted from the noise. Suggestions for calming the critters included singing, reading a book out loud, providing treats and blowing bubbles.

Children ages 12 and up are welcome with a parent.

No experience is necessary, and and a short orientation will be provided.

The shelters are located at 2500 S. 27th Ave. in Phoenix and 2630 W. Rio Salado Parkway in Mesa.
