Mesa couple sues Las Vegas hotel where wife was shot at concert

PHOENIX — A Phoenix-area woman who took a bullet to the brain during the mass shooting in Las Vegas last year joined a lawsuit with several others against the hotel where the gunman staged his attack.

Jovanna and Frank Calzadillas of Mesa were listed as plaintiffs in the negligence filing in the Clark County, Nevada, Courthouse dated Feb. 16, 2018. The filing was amended June 4.

Stephen Paddock killed 58 people and wounded more than 800 when he opened fired on the Route 91 Harvest Festival on Oct. 1, 2017. It was the worst mass shooting in the United States.

Hundreds in California filed suit against the hotel operators — Mandalay Bay Hotel and parent company MGM Resorts — and concert promoter Live Nation in November.

Courts dismissed several of those suits.

Jovanna Calzadillas was hospitalized for months, first in Las Vegas, when doctors told her husband that her injuries weren’t survivable, then at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix.

She was on life support in Las Vegas when Frank Calzadillas, an officer with the Salt River Police Department, dreamed she told him she would be fine.

Jovanna Calzadillas went home in late January, four months after the shooting.

Her husband’s supervisor, James Sutphen, set up a GoFundMe the day after the attack to help defray medical and travel costs for the family. The account was still active.

The couple has two children.
