PHOENIX — A 3-year-old has died after the child was hit by a vehicle in a Tempe apartment complex parking lot on Monday.

Sgt. Ron Elcock with the Tempe Police Department said the child was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The child was hit in the parking lot near Lemon Street and Terrace Road around 2 p.m., Elcock said.

Court documents showed that the front tire of the truck driven by Lavelle R. Ferebee went over the child and “caused life threatening injury.”

Elcock said Ferebee, 61, remained on scene and was cooperating with the investigation. He was arrested for DUI after showing signs of impairment.

He was booked and released without being charged while police await lab results.

The investigation is still ongoing.
