PHOENIX — A man who was struck by a Phoenix Fire crew’s ambulance in the driveway of a station and was hospitalized in critical condition has died, authorities said Tuesday.
Sgt. Armando Carbajal with the Phoenix Police Department told KTAR News 92.3 FM that a crew was responding to a call, leaving Fire Station No. 3 near Seventh and Grand avenues Monday around 11:30 a.m. when the incident occurred.
Carbajal said the rescue team “heard a bump noise” and saw a backpack on the ground when they looked in the rearview mirror of their vehicle.
Crews immediately started to treat the unidentified man and transported him to a hospital.
The Phoenix Police Department’s homicide unit was investigating, shutting down streets in the area.
The roads were eventually reopened to traffic.
