State officials issue high-pollution advisory for Phoenix area

PHOENIX — Environmental officials in Arizona issued a high-pollution advisory for Friday, citing ozone levels that were expected to exceed federal health standards.

The state Department of Environmental Quality announced the notice for Maricopa County. Ozone can irritate the respiratory system, aggravate asthma and affect the immune system.

Outdoor workers were the most exposed, while anyone exercising outside could be vulnerable short term. Children, older people or anyone with respiratory problems could have difficulties breathing the air.

Those people will likely get headaches, wheeze when they inhale or exhale, feel nauseous or have shortness of breath.

The department and Maricopa County Air Quality Department suggested driving a little as possible, carpooling or taking public transportation; gas up vehicles after dark; and skip drive-thru lanes.
