No Arizona students reach final round of 2018 National Spelling Bee
After making it through the first three rounds, four Arizona students will not be on the stage for the final round of the 2018 Scripps National Spelling Bee.

PHOENIX — After making it through the first three rounds, four Arizona students will not be on the stage for the final round of the 2018 Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Based on a written test taken Tuesday, 41 of the remaining 321 spellers from round three moved on to the final round, which is limited to a maximum of 50 spellers.
A total of eight Arizona students qualified for the tournament in National Harbor, Maryland, just outside Washington D.C. The field started with 519 students from U.S. states and territories.
Four of the eight made it passed the third round:
- Scottsdale’s Marcus Giorza: angularity.
- Window Rock’s Kelly Haven: calzone.
- Scottsdale’s Max Greenspan: misdemeanant.
- Glendale’s Iscent George: blight.
While three other Arizonans went out Wednesday:
- Queen Creek’s Isabella Padilla: Zendo (incorrectly spelled xendo).
- Chandler’s Daniel Wu: dyspeptic (incorrectly spelled dispeptic).
- Goodyear’s Lindsay Davis: solecism (incorrectly spelled solisism).
Peoria’s Annabelle Tran went out Tuesday after misspelling tracheostomy.
The finals will be televised in two parts Thursday, with one segment from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Arizona time on ESPN2 and the completion on ESPN from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
The champion will win $40,000 in cash and other prizes.
