Authorities said a teen suspect was in custody after shooting a fellow student in the arm Friday morning at a Los Angeles-area high school.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department sent multiple deputies to Highland High School in Palmdale in response to a shooting call at around 7 a.m. Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives also responded.

The sheriff’s department said the suspect, a 14-year-old male, was detained and a firearm was recovered. Local news reports said he was taken into custody at a nearby grocery store.

The victim was hospitalized in stable condition.

A Los Angeles County Fire Department told KTLA 5 the injured student “self-transported” to the hospital.

The campus was cleared by deputies.

Another call reported that shots were heard near Manzanita Elementary School about 8 miles away in Palmdale, which is north of Los Angeles, but an investigation found no evidence of a crime.

According to the Manzanita website, all Palmdale elementary schools were put on lockdown in response to the incident at the high school.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
