PHOENIX — Part of a major Phoenix-area freeway will be closed overnight during the Cinco de Mayo weekend, potentially leading to major backups throughout the area.

The Arizona Department of Transportation said the westbound Interstate 10 will be closed between 51st and 67th avenues in west Phoenix from 10 p.m. on Friday to 5 a.m. on Monday.

This closure will allow crews to complete bridge work at the South Mountain Freeway interchange.

The on-ramps at 35th and 43rd avenues will also be closed.

Westbound traffic will be able to exit the freeway at 51st Avenue, detour to McDowell Road or Van Buren Street and return to the highway at 67th Avenue during the closure.

Crews will use a 100-foot crane that will place temporary structures to support a concrete structure. The structure will eventually carry a flyover bridge connecting to the South Mountain Freeway.

The southbound Loop 202 will also be closed between Guadalupe and Elliot roads in east Mesa from 10 p.m. on Friday to 9 a.m. on Saturday for the installation of traffic-management technology.

Northbound Seventh Avenue will be closed at Interstate 17 south of downtown Phoenix from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday to allow crews to install an overhead sign.

The department said drivers should allow for extra travel time, use caution and prepare to use alternative routes throughout the weekend due to these closures.
