PHOENIX — Now that legislation to fund increases in education spending in Arizona has been passed, including 20 percent pay raises for teachers by 2020, districts were finalizing plans to reopen schools.

Most campuses statewide have been closed since the teacher walkout began April 26.

Some districts announced plans to reopen Thursday but had put those plans on hold because the education bill was still working its way through the Legislature.

Organizers of Red for Ed, the movement behind the walkout, said teachers wouldn’t commit to returning to the classroom until the bill was finalized.

Educators and their supporters held rallies, attended legislative sessions and took their case directly to lawmakers at the state Capitol daily during the work stoppage.

The bill passed through both houses early Thursday morning after all-night sessions and was signed into law by by Gov. Doug Ducey.
