Some Arizona school districts already have reopened their doors

PHOENIX — As the statewide teacher walkout entered its second day Friday, not all Arizona school districts remained closed due to a lack of staffing.

Students in the Casa Grande Elementary and Casa Grande Union High School districts returned to class after one day off, the district offices confirmed.

Most of the state’s schools remained closed and were expected to keep their doors shut until the teacher walkout ends, but some districts already said they expected to reopen after the weekend.

Peoria Unified School District will be closed Monday but open Tuesday, an email from an Arizona Educators United liaison with the district said. Teachers are allowed to choose whether or not they will come in.

A message to parents posted Friday on the Tolleson Elementary School District website said its schools would reopen Monday.

The Cave Creek Unified School District confirmed that the plans it announced before the walkout, including the intention to reopen Monday, have not changed.

The Fountain Hills Unified School District announced Friday that its schools intended to re-open on Monday.

On Thursday, Chandler Unified said it expected to reopen Monday, but the district decided against it a few hours later because of staffing concerns.

Schools with the Queen Creek Unified School District were expected to be closed on Monday.

The Washington Elementary School District will remain closed on Monday, but will continue to provide free breakfast and lunch at all schools and childcare at several locations.

Teachers across Arizona walked off the job Thursday after weeks of protests in an effort to secure higher wages and increased funding for education.

Lawmakers have been working to approve a proposal by Gov. Doug Ducey to increase teacher pay by 20 percent by 2020.

Educators and their supporters rallied Thursday and Friday at the Arizona Capitol.

An estimated 50,000 protesters marched through downtown Phoenix from Chase Field to the Capitol on Thursday.

The Arizona Department of Public safety estimated that 4,000 were on hand for Friday’s rally, where Arizona Education Association President Joe Thomas announced plans for the walkout to continue into next week.
