Family-owned costume shop in Phoenix to close doors

PHOENIX — A family-owned costume shop in Phoenix announced last week that it will be closing its doors for good after this Halloween season.

Easley’s Fun Shop posted to Facebook about the closing and addressed its friends and family.

“After 72 years of being a family business, we have decided to just be a family,” it read. “This will be our last Halloween. Thank you for all your love and support over the years. We have loved being part of your lives.” 

There were more than 800 shares and 400 comments on the post.

The comments expressed sadness, praise and thanks directed toward the owners and staff.

According to its website, the shop had operated through four generations of the Easley family.

Bert Easley was a vaudeville magician who founded the store in 1947. It started as a small magic shop but soon grew to gag gifts, novelties, mild adult jokes and, eventually, costumes.

The store grew to hold 5,000 costumes available to rent and 10,000 available for sale.

The news came not long after another Valley costume shop, Groovy Ghoulies Costumes, had to shut down after 40 years of business.

Easley’s Fun Shop was located on McDowell Road near Fifth Avenue.
