Arizona Board of Regents president to step down later this year

PHOENIX — Eileen Klein, the head of the Arizona Board of Regents, announced Monday she would be stepping down from her position after serving on the board for five years.

Klein announced her decision in a lengthy blog post, explaining that she would be leaving her position as president later this year to “take some time off before deciding what my next adventure will be.

“Recognizing that the success of our state and the people who live here is tied more than ever to educational success, I came to the Arizona Board of Regents to help ensure a vibrant university system for students today and those of tomorrow,” the post read.

“I’m proud of what we have accomplished for our universities since I climbed aboard here five years ago. This has been some of the most rewarding work of my life, knowing that students and our state will benefit for years to come.”

Klein did not give a set departure date, but according to The Arizona Republic, she will step down in June.

The news was announced one day before the Board of Regents were set to hold a public hearing for students and individuals to comment and provide feedback on the tuition proposals raised for the 2018-2019 school year.

“Public higher education will continue to face turbulent waters as America continues to search for new education delivery options to reduce costs, expand access and improve student outcomes amidst dwindling public investment. These are some of the most pressing and compelling challenges America faces today. Our state is no different,” the post continued.

“The people of Arizona can take great pride in our universities, which are among the finest in the world. These universities belong to the people of this state. They are part of our rich history and are fundamental to the growth of our state and the prosperity of future generations.”

In a statement, Chair Bill Ridenour said he was “deeply appreciative” of Klein’s leadership and said she has been “pivotal in advancing the board’s aggressive strategic plan” in raising the quality and contributions of the three state universities, Arizona State University, University of Arizona and Northern Arizona University.

“It is with the highest regard that we thank her for her dedication and commitment and wish her all the best in her next endeavors,” the statement continued.

Klein was appointed to the role overseeing the university enterprise in 2013 after serving as former Gov. Jan. Brewer’s chief of staff and budget director. She previously was an executive in the health care industry.

She also oversaw belt-tightening and tuition increases as the universities struggled with state budget cuts.

The board will chose a replacement for Klein.
