PHOENIX — Castle Hot Springs Resort, one of Arizona’s most historic hotels, will welcome guests for the first time in more than 40 years when it reopens later this year.

“In this new incarnation, there will only be 33 accommodations,” spokesman Steve Sampson said of the resort north of Lake Pleasant. “Most of the accommodations are going to be bungalows and cabins.”

The resort was scheduled to open in October for the first time since it burned down in the late 1970s.

People staying at the resort will be able to enjoy water pumped into their room from the nearby hot springs. Breakfast and dinner will also be included in the nightly price.

Castle Hot Springs Resort used to be one of the state’s premiere destinations since it unlocked the doors for the first time in 1896.

“It hosted U.S. presidents, from Woodrow Wilson to Calvin Coolidge,” Sampson said.

It also played host to a young John F. Kennedy for several months in 1945 and other prominent East Coast families, such as the Rockefellers and Carnegies.

Sampson posted several photos to Facebook that showed some of the items found during the restoration. He said a cannon ball, old bullets and whiskey bottles were some of the oddities found, along with a 48-star American flag — meaning it was made prior to 1959.

He also found a good deal of historic images of the hotel, some of which you can see in the slideshow below, and posted others of the remodel. Those are toward the end of the slideshow.
