Zebra escapes Chandler Ostrich Festival grounds, hit by car and killed

PHOENIX — A zebra that escaped from a corral at a Chandler park was hit by a car and killed Wednesday morning, police said.

An SUV struck the animal shortly before 6 a.m. near McQueen and Germann roads. The zebra was going to be part of this weekend’s Chandler Ostrich Festival.

Two other zebras also managed to get loose but were safely returned to Tumbleweed Park.

The animals had been kept in a pen at the park, Sgt. Daniel Mejia said.

Police had been called about zebras on the road. By the time they arrived, one of the animals had been struck. It died on impact.

The driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment.
