A new video released by Waymo allows customers to see how their autonomous vehicles work as it travels through the Metro Phoenix area.

PHOENIX — Waymo, a self-driving car project, has released its 360-degree experience to help consumers understand how driverless cars actually work.

The video used footage and real-time data from one of their hybrid vans’ trip around the Phoenix metro area and allowed viewers to see through the eyes of the vehicle.

It explained the radar technology that Waymo cars use to travel safely and allowed viewers to use their mouse and drag the video around in any angle to see how these cars are able to function.

“[The cars] use a range of technology we’ve built from the ground up to understand the world around them and get you where you need to go,” the video said. “As it drives, Waymo uses LiDAR, which sends out millions of laser beams per second to build up a detailed picture of the world all 360 degrees around it.”

The cars also use radar to detect the distance of nearby objects.

The company’s fleet has driven over five million miles since its launch in 2009. It has tested its technology in 25 U.S. cities including parts of the Phoenix area.

It announced in February that they plan to start charging Phoenix-area riders who use their autonomous vehicles.
