Live results of Arizona special primary election to replace Franks

PHOENIX — Voters went to the polls on Tuesday in a special primary election to begin the process of selecting a new person to take the place of former U.S. Rep. Trent Franks, who resigned late last year.

They had to pick one person from a pool of 12 Republican, two Democrat and three write-in candidates who they want to see represent Arizona’s 8th Congressional District.

Two winners from Tuesday’s vote will square off in a special general election on April 24. They will likely be determined by 9 p.m.

Maricopa Country Recorder Adrian Fontes said the voting was going well, despite a few snags.

“As with any endeavor like this, we’re really glad that some of the hiccups have been reported to us,” he said. “We’ve got teams in place to deal with some of those issues when they do come up.”

The election was held to replace Franks, who resigned his seat in December following allegations that he offered staffers millions of dollars to serve as surrogates.

The 8th Congressional District covers much of the western Phoenix suburbs, where a Democrat has not been elected in more than 35 years.

Fontes said his office had tabulated nearly 100,000 early ballots as of Tuesday afternoon. That count will be the first to be released about 8 p.m.
