PHOENIX — For more than 100 years, the steps of the Washington Traditional School were flooded with children before the school’s closure in 2015.

Now, the oldest school in Arizona is undergoing cosmetic changes as it transitions from a school to district offices.

With a total of around $400,000 in renovation costs, the 25 members of the Prescott Unified School District staff will relocate to the building once its remodel is complete in March. A grand opening ceremony is scheduled for May 1.

In addition to the district members, the school also houses the district’s preschool, which will be divided between two classrooms on the first floor.

The playground behind the school will be remodeled as well, with a handicap-accessible walkway installed for the front lawn.
