PHOENIX — A standoff between a man wanted in Arizona and police in Minnesota has ended after a second day Tuesday on a university campus.
The Star Tribune of Minneapolis reported the man, later identified as 38-year-old Rashad Bowman, who had been holed up in a hotel room on the University of Minnesota’s campus was in custody.
A SWAT team managed to flush him from the Graduate Minneapolis Hotel after launching tear gas into his sixth-floor room.
The 36-hour standoff began after officers tried to arrest Bowman on a warrant out of Arizona for a nonviolent white collar crime.
University Police Chief Matt Clark said the standoff began early Monday and authorities spent hours talking with him off and on.
“Our goal is to have a peaceful resolution,” Clark told the paper.
“Time is important, yes, but more important is safety.”
A woman who had been in the room with the man for several hours Monday was eventually released.
Authorities have not said whether the man was armed and didn’t refer to the woman as a hostage.
“The individual is still in his room and we’re just kind of continuing to try to communicate, and waiting him out. Most of the rest of the operations on campus will be fairly normal,” university spokesman Chuck Tombarge said.
The university said there was no direct threat to students.
